About the Department

The department came into being in the year 1957, the very year of the inception of the College which was at that time under University of Calcutta. Having just a handful of students, English was offered only as pass (general) subject in the beginning. After the establishment of Vidyasagar University at Midnapore Town, the college came under the affiliation of Vidyasagar University in 1985. Consequently, English Department also follows the syllabus and examination rules of Vidyasagar University. The department started to offer 3-yr Degree English (Hons) Course only from the session 1994-95. Then, from the session 1998-99, in keeping with the changes in the Academic scenario, English was made a compulsory subject for all the students of the undergraduate courses. From the session 2006-07, B.A. Hons Course is studied as 3-Tier (Part- I, II, & III) Degree Course with a view to complete Part-I of the Course in 1st year, Part-II in 2nd year and Part-III in the final year. The syllabus is recently revised again in 2014-15 session with the inclusion of highly researched areas of present time such as Indian Writing in English and Indian Writing in English Translation, American Literature, and New Literatures including Writing from the Margins. As per UGC norms, the Department is ready to launch CBCS structure from 2018-19 session onwards.
