From the Principal’s Desk

On behalf of Raja Narendra Lal Khan Women’s College (Autonomous), I extend a warm welcome to you all.

This renowned institution, popularly known as Gope College, began its journey on 22nd August 1957. It has come a long way since then. The college was granted autonomous status by the UGC, with confirmation from the affiliating Vidyasagar university, starting from the academic session 2018–2019 for a period of 10 years. Notably, it is the first women’s college in West Bengal to receive this prestigious distinction.

Thanks to the generous contribution of Mrs. Anjali Khan, wife of Sri Amrendra Lal Khan of the Narajole royal family, the college started its journey in the historical Gope Palace with only a handful of students, with the unwavering support and encouragement of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal. The palace carries a rich legacy of hosting great political leaders, eminent thinkers, and freedom fighters during the British Raj. Gradually, it was transformed into a center of women’s education.

Over the years, the college has evolved into a distinguished institution of higher education. Currently, it offers 28 undergraduate and 14 postgraduate departments, with plans to introduce more UG and PG courses in the near future. Our meritorious and disciplined students, a significant number of research scholars, highly qualified and dedicated faculty and efficient staff have earned the college recognition from several academic bodies including the State Higher Education Department, UGC, DBT, CPE-II, DST-FIST (Phase I & II), and the MHRD, Government of India. The college also houses two research centers—one in Humanities and Social Sciences, and the other in Natural and Applied Sciences—affiliated with Vidyasagar University, Paschim Medinipur.

Despite being situated in a rural setting at Phulpahari Mauja on the outskirts of Midnapore town, the college is equipped with modern infrastructure and facilities essential for higher education. Our dynamic website provides detailed information about academic and structural features of the college. We have ICT-enabled and smart classrooms in every department, modern science laboratories, a language lab, campus-wide Wi-Fi, hostels accommodating over 450 students, extensive playgrounds, a fully furnished gymnasium, a spacious auditorium, a well-stocked library, and a campus under CCTV surveillance. We also provide biometric attendance, free health check-ups, affordable canteens, and water ATMs. The college's Career Advancement Centre conducts several value-added certificate courses at nominal fees and organizes regular campus interviews with participation from reputed companies.

Once you join the college as a student, we sincerely hope you will use all the opportunities and facilities provided to enrich both yourself and our institution. May your honest efforts help you grow into a mature, socially responsible individual, and may you always feel proud to speak of your alma mater wherever you go.
