About the Department
Modern Physiology was first coined by the French Physiologist, Jean Fernal (A.D. 1497-1558) the term “Physiologia” i.e. Physics- nature and Logia- knowledge, meaning discourse of nature. Later on the term Physiology was adopted from the Greek word “Physiologicos”. Its root lied from medical sciences, but touches all the branches of sciences- both physical and biological sciences.
In our college, Physiology was taught as Pass course on 17th July, 1961 under the affiliation of University of Calcutta and after 1985 under Vidyasagar University. In the year 1991 three years Honors’ course has been introduced under the affiliation with Vidyasagar University. The two years Pass course was again changed into three year General course from 1998.
Two class rooms with two laboratories were the initial infrastructure of this department. With the advancement of time to communicate with new syllabus many new laboratories are included in the department with different modern class rooms. At present the department is constructed with six laboratories i.e Cytology, Histology, hematology, Experimental Physiology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Human Experiment, Ergonomics, Sports Science, Nanoscience, Biomedical Instrumentation, Computational biology, Nutrition, and Clinical Biochemistry. To improve the teaching learning process, the department is now continuing with two smart classes.
After the long journey with UG courses with a hill top success now the department has introduced the PG course in ‘Human Physiology’ on 8th August, 2016 under the affiliation of Vidyasagar University.
