About the Department

Department of Botany started its glorious journey from 27th July, 1961 with the subject being introduced as a General course. With success all around the corners and brilliant achievement by students, it was subsequently taken up as an Honours course from 1988. From the session 2006-07, B.Sc. Hons Course was being studied as 3-Tier (Part- I, II, & III) Degree Course with a view to complete Part-I of the Course in 1st year, Part-II in 2nd year and Part-III in the final year. The demand of the subject is very high with the academic session of 2016-2017 seeing a record number of 250 applicants for the stipulated 63 seats. In the academic session of 2017-2018, the CBCS system as laid out by UGC was adopted by the department whereby the semester system was introduced. This academic session [2018-2019], a record number of 510 candidates applied for the stipulated 63 seats. We feel happy to inform that West Bengal State Council of Higher Education has approved the Post-Graduate Section of our Department from the session 2019.

Several students of our Department have achieved great success over the years. In the year 2015-2016, five of our students have qualified NET/GATE/SET. The first semester examination results were excellent with nearly 80% of the students securing more than 7.5 SGPA. Many of our bright students have been the University toppers and completed their PhD from reputed institutes. Performance of the result of the students has been satisfactory over the years with nearly 90% -100% passing out percentage. Several students have also secured University rank and some of them were University toppers with gold /silver medals. The department has received several prestigious Govt. of India funding including DST-FIST, UGC-CPE and UGC-BSR. It has also participated under the DBT STAR College Programme. Many of our faculties have been awarded with Govt. of India as well as State Government funded minor and major research projects. Three project fellows have also been awarded Ph.D under their supervision.
